McClafferty Convicted in Check Fraud Case

RAVENNA — After slightly more than an hour of deliberation, a Portage County jury on Monday convicted controversial Streetsboro businessman Brett McClafferty in a 2017 check fraud scheme involving several banks.

Following slightly more than two days of testimony, a jury of seven men and five women found McClafferty — who turned 30 on Friday — guilty of two counts of forgery, both fifth-degree felonies, and two counts of theft, one fifth-degree felony and one first-degree misdemeanor.

Common Pleas Judge Becky Doherty immediately revoked McClafferty’s bond and ordered him held in the Portage County jail pending sentencing. He faces up to one year in prison on each of the felony charges, and six months in jail on the misdemeanor.
